THE PERETZ FAMILY PART 1 – Introduction-
RACHEL: In the seventies, the Peretz family lived in Ofirah in the Sharm El-Sheikh region of the Sinai Penninsula. 6 children were born to Miriam and and Eliezer Peretz: Uriel, Eliraz, Hadas, Avichai, Elyassaf and Bat-El. Following the peace agreement betweeen Israel and Egypt in 1979, the Peretz Family was relocated to Givat Ze’ev near Yerushalayim.
ARIEL: The children of the family, who grew up in the picturesque Sinai Peninsula, developed a great love of nature, hiking and the ocean.
The eldest, Uriel, studied in the Yeshivat Ohr Etzion Military prep. school, where he grew spritiaully and prepared for his army service, which began in 1995.

Ø     THE PERETZ FAMILY PART 2 – The Fall of Uriel
ARIEL: In November 1995 Uriel joined Tzahal. His medical condition would not allow him to join the prestigious Golani Brigade and he was assigned to be an army cook. Uriel was not ready to give up on his dream of following in his father’s footsteps to become a Golani Brigade soldier. He persisted on becoming a combat soldier and they finally gave him the chance to take the necessary exams to become a combat soldier. Not only did Uriel pass the exams he became a member of an Elite infantry unit of the Golani Brigade.
RACHEL: His mother would later say about him: “His spirit was greater than his body, and it was his spirit that brought him to where he ended up.”
After completing the officer’s course, Uriel was sent with his unit to be stationed in Southern Lebanon. On the 7th of Kislev תשנ״ט – November 25th, 1998, Uriel was killed in an ambush. He was 22 years old.
Ø     EDDIE: This is how Eliraz, Uriel’s younger brother eulogized him.

RACHEL: Eliraz Peretz said that after the death of Uriel, he was not sure what to do. He was in basic training for his Golani Brigade Unit, and because of his brother’s death he was eligible for an army exemption. He deliberated intensly, but the answer was clear.
ARIEL: “I asked myself, if I truly believe that this is a Milchemet Mitzvah – a war required by the Torah – and if I truly believe that I have a mitzvah to join the army and to be a combat soldier, then the answer is yes, I will continue and nothing has changed. The fact that my brother was killed does not change the reality of the war. It is a Milchemet Mitzvah and not a Milchemet Reshut – a war by choice. To be a soldier of Tzahal is a statement – I am here and I will continue on.”

RACHEL: After finishing his officer’s course, Eliraz became the commander of the prestigious Unit 12 of the Golani Brigade. He rose through the ranks until he became the commander of the Gideon Unit.
Only 3 weeks ago, on Erev Shabbat Kodesh, Parashat Tzav, Shabbat Hagadol – March 26th, 2010 – in an exchange of fire with terrorists who were planting explosives along the Gaza security fence, Eliraz was killed together with one of his soldiers. He was 31 years old.
Ø     EDDIE: Eliraz is the latest of Israel’s fallen soldiers. B’Ezrat Hashem, May he be the last. Eliraz’ Golani Commander eulogied him:
