Yom Ha’atzmaut

Understanding the depth of the miracle

Ami: “Yom Ha’atzmaut is coming. But I feel very confused. On one hand, I obviously feel obliged to celebrate along with the rest of Am Yisrael on this great day. On the other hand, so many things are happening in Eretz Yisrael and around the world … I mean, terrorism, secularity, hatred, is it really time to celebrate the coming Geula?”

Yisrael: “I don’t believe I am hearing this from you. After two thousand years of exile and despair we are merited to an independent state of our own in the Promised Land. Eretz Yisrael is now the center of the Torani world, the quality of life in Eretz Yisrael is great, the people are great … I don’t understand how you don’t see it!”

Ami: “Yes, but who says this is actually the Geula? With all the problems that we have I allow myself to ask - is this the redemption that we have been dreaming of and longing for?”

Yisrael: “It’s interesting to see that your question was brought up about sixty years ago, by Rabbi Teichtal zt”l, who was murdered by the nazis during the holocaust. In his outstanding book, “Em Habanim Smecha”, which he wrote in the midst of the holocaust Rabbi Taichtal is asking the following question:”

I know, my son, I know that you will challenge my position with a formidable refutation. If it is true that the rebuilding of our Holy Land is a sign of the imminent end of days and the beginning of the redemption, how could the majority of the builders, unfortunately, desecrate the Sabbath and commit other sins? …  How could the Creator of the Universe bring the beginning of the redemption and a sign through them? Do we not maintain that good things are brought by people who are worthy?  (Em Habanim Smecha, Chapter 2, part 12 )

Ami: “This is indeed my question! If Medinat Yisrael is the beginning of the redemption process, how can there be so much secularity in Eretz Yisrael? Why are there so many issues?”

Yisrael: “Let’s try to figure this step by step.”

((Shabbat 31a

Rava said: when a man is brought to be judged, they say to him: Did you deal faithfully? Did you set times for Torah? Did you involve yourself with the mitzvah of “pru urevu”? Did you long for salvation? Did you analyze wisely? Did you understand things by inference

·        What is the practical meaning of “longing for salvation”? How can one’s longing for Mashiach be measured?

The deep longing (for salvation) … is not simply something to expect, but rather it is a great and holy task to learn how to wait with an eye (coming from the word "לצפות"=צפיה) that penetrates to the internal dimension of every thing and to bring it out …

((Rav Charlap, Tovim Me’orot

·                    According to Rav Charlap the word ציפיה in the sense of longing comes from the word  צפיה in the sense of observing.

What must we observe when longing for salvation? What depth can we find in the redemption process?

((Sotah 49b

In the footsteps of The Mashiach  insolence will Increase and honor dwindle, the vine will yield its fruit [abundantly] but wine will be dear, the government will turn to heresy and there will be none [to offer them] reproof; the meeting place [of scholars] will be used for immorality; Galilee will be destroyed, Gablan desolated, and the dwellers on the frontier will go about [begging] from place to place without anyone to take pity on them; the wisdom of the learned will degenerate those who fear sin will be despised, and the truth will be lacking; youths will put old men to shame, the old will stand up in the presence of the young, a son will revile his father, a daughter will rise against her mother, a daughter in law against her mother in law, and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household; the face of the generation will be like the face of a dog, a son will not feel ashamed before his father so upon whom is it for us to rely? Upon our father who is in heaven.

(Rav Kook, Orot Techiya 51)

We have a tradition that there will be a spiritual rebellion in the land of Israel and the people of Israel… the spiritual tranquillity that some of the nation will enjoy, who will imagine to themselves that they have already completely achieved their goal will diminish the soul, and there will come days where it will be said “ I have no desire for them any longer,” the desire for lofty and holy ideals will weaken, and the spirit will sink, until there comes a storm and a revolution will occur, and it will be seen clearly that the power of Israel lies in the Kodesh Olamim, in God’s light and Torah, with the desire for spiritual light

·                    Why must there be spiritual rebellion at the time of the redemption? In what sense is the spiritual rebellion an indication of the coming redemption?

Take as example from a passage in the Talmud which discusses the un-kosher birds. The Talmud says that “Racham” (a name of a bird) is the Sherakrak bird … and that we have a tradition that if this bird sits on the ground and whistles, Mashiach will come, as it says “I will whistle to them and gather them” (Zecharyah 10:8) … I was astonished when I read this statement. According to Chazal, the prophet promises us that an un-kosher bird will signal the final redemption … You can now question G-d! Why would he do such a thing? Why would he bring the tidings of the most prodigious event, the one which we await with bated breath, specifically through un-kosher birds? Would it not have been more appropriate to do so through kosher bird and bring good tidings through meritorious and pure individuals? However, the truth is as Iyov says, Can you fathom the searching’s of G-d? Who can examine His deeds? Who can comprehend His ways? Only G-d understands His way, why He specifically made this creature His messenger. Why do you involve yourself with the Merciful One’s hidden matters?!

In any event, I have shown you, my son, an example which demonstrates that one cannot question G-ds’s deeds. His ways are above and beyond our ways, and our thoughts are not His thoughts. Most importantly, it is self evident that these pioneers are G-d’s messenger. Keep silent and so not ask questions against G-d. A word to the wise in sufficient …

Now, the Kabbalists explain that when Hashem wants to accomplish a great thins which affects both the celestial and earthly beings, He enwraps it in many types of coverings. He even uses unpleasant and ugly means so that the accusers will not take notice of it. For if it would be done openly, the accusers would immediately come to protest, and the Attribute if Justice would hinder the matter.

(Em Habanim Smecha, Chapter 2, part 12 )

·                    Why must the redemption process be hidden according to Rabbi Teichtal? Why is there so much ugliness in the world before the arrival of Mashiach?
