Although Tu Bishvat focuses on fruit trees, trees in general are important.

Trees represent continuity.

 

בספר דברים פרק י"ט משול האדם לעץ: "כי האדם עץ השדה". אותו רעיון מופיע אף בספר תהילים כאשר דוד המלך מבקש לתאר את האדם הצדיק: "והיה כעץ שתול על פלגי מים, אשר פריו ייתן בעיתו ועלהו לא יבול וכל אשר יעשה יצליח"

 

In the book of Devarim, (Chapter 19) Man is compared to a tree: “For Man is a tree of the field”. The same idea is mentioned in Tehilim, for when King David wanted to describe the “righteous man” he wrote: “He will be like the tree that is rooted on the shores of the water, always producing its fruit in the right time, whose leaves will never wither, and everything he does will be successful”.

 

 

The Seven Species

 

"כי ה' אלוהיך מביאך אל ארץ טובה ארץ נחלי מים עיינות ותהומות יוצאים בבקעה ובהר:

ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש: ארץ אשר לא במסכנות תאכל בה לחם לא תחסר כל בה ארץ אשר אבניה ברזל ומהרריה תחצוב נחושת: ואכל ושבעת וברכת את ה' אלוהיך על הארץ הטובה אשר נתן לך:" [דברים ח']

 

For the Lord your G-D has brought you to a good Land, a  Land with streams of water, of springs and underground water that spring out of valleys and hills; a Land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates;  a Land of olive oil, and honey; a Land where you will eat bread without scarceness, you will not lack any thing in it; a Land whose stones are iron, and from whose mountain will dig brass.

 When you have eaten and are satisfied, then you will bless the Lord G-D for the good land that He has given you. [Devarim 8].

WHEAT:

 

"ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש."

 

 

Wheat’s essential role puts it first among the Seven Species. Since ancient times it has been considered one of man’s most important crops. From wheat flour we produce bread, our most basic food. On Shavuot, the Festival of Bikkuurim, the people would bring the “first of the wheat crop” to the Beit Hamikdash.

  • EAT THE WHEAT COOKIES

 

 

Barley:

 

"ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש."

 

Barley is also a staple food. Barley requires less water than wheat. Even fields in the arid Negev produce a high- quality barley crop.

 

·        EAT THE CEREAL THAT CONTAINS BARLEY.

 

 

 

 

 

Grapes/ Raisins

 

"ארץ חיטה ושעורה  וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש."

 

 למה נמשלו ישראל לגפן? אלא מה הגפן כשבעליה מבקשין שתשביח מה הם עושין? עוקרין אותה ממקומה ושותלין אותה במקום אחר והיא משבחת, כך כיוון שבקש הקב"ה להודיע ישראל בעולם מה עשה? עקרן ממצרים והביאן למדבר והתחילו מצליחים שם והתחילו מקבלין התורה ואומרים (שמות כד) " כל אשר דבר ה' נעשה ונשמע ויצא להם שם בעולם". [שמות רבה פרשה מד]

 

Why is Israel compared to a vine?

Just as when an owner wants to improve his vine he uproots it and replants it somewhere else, where it indeed flourishes, so too when G-D intended to make Israel’s fame known throughout the world. He uprooted them from Egypt; and brought them into the wilderness, where they began to improve and began to receive the Torah, and where they said; “all that the Lord hath spoken, we will do, and obey”

Figs : 

 

ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן  ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש."

 

The fig tree is broad and gives a lot of shade. Its leaves fall off at the beginning of the winter and it flowers in the springtime. The sweet- tasting fruit ripens in the hottest part of the summer, and figs are eaten fresh or dried.

 

אגדת התאנה:

פעם אחת בא אורח לארץ ישראל, נכנס לביתו של איכר והתקבל בסבר פנים יפות. אצמר האיכר לבנו "עלה בני, לעלייה, והבא לנו תאנים יפות מן החבית". עלה הבן לעלייה, הכניס ידו לחבית והנה יש בה דבש. ירד אל אביו ואמר לו  - " אבא, החבית מלאה דבש, ואין בה תאנים". אמר לו אביו " הכנס ידך לתוך החבית ותמצא את התאנים". עלה הבן לעלייה הכניס ידו אל החבית ומצא את התאנים בתוך הדבש שעלה מהן. אכלו מן התאנים ושמחו בהן. יצא האורח וראה עיזים אוכלות תחת התאנה. היה הדבש מטפטף מן התאנים, וחלב מטפטף מעטיני העזים. עמד האורח ואמר "ארץ חמדה היא ארץ ישראל, ארץ זבת חלב ודבש"

 

The Fig:

Once a guest come to Israel. He entered the house of a farmer and was welcomed very nicely by him. The farmer said to his sun: “Son, go up to the attic and bring us figs from the barrel. The son went, put his hand into the barrel – and suddenly there was honey inside.

The son went down to his father and said: “ Father the barrel is full of honey there are no figs in it”. His father said: “ Go up again, put your hand in the barrel and you will find figs” the son listened to his father. He put his hand in the barrel and found there figs, in the honey that came out of them. Everyone ate from the figs and was very happy with them. The guest went out and saw goats eating under the fig tree. The honey was   dripping from the figs, and milk was dripping from the udders of the goats. The guest said: “ Israel is beloved Land, a Land of milk and honey”.

 

 

Pomegranates:

 

ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה  ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש".

 

The pomegranates red flowers, as well as its rice dark red fruit, are a very pleasant sight. The fruit is made up of many seeds, which are tiny packets of tart juice.

 

Rabbi Shimon Ben Lakish said: Even the empty ones of the Jews are as full of mitzvoth as a pomegranate is with seeds. (Eruvin 19)

 

Along these lines, on Rosh Hashanah we express the hope: “ May it be Your will…that we be as full of mitzvoth as the pomegranate is full of seeds.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Olives:

 

"ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש."

 

The olive branch is a symbol of peace, as it was evidence for Noah of the end of the flood. It was chosen for the official emblem of the State of Israel, as the olive tree is the most common tree in the country, and its deep roots symbolize the people’s strong ties to its land. The two olive branches are placed on the two sides of the seven- branched Menorah.

Dates:

 

ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון ארץ זית שמן ודבש".

 

The date is only one of the Seven Species, which is also one of the Four Species (lulav) used on the festival of Succot. Dates ripen at the end of the summer and are very sweet. They are eaten fresh or dried, and are also used to make honey. The tree’s long narrow leaves are used to make a basket, and rope is made from the fibers of the trunk.

 

 

The torah compares a righteous person to a palm tree:

The righteous blooms like a date palm: he grows tall like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they flourish in the courtyards of our God. In old age they still produce fruit; they are full of sap and freshness, attesting that the Lord is upright – my Rock, in whom there is no wrong.

בט"ו בשבט, החג הקושר את העם עם אדמתו וארצו ועם עציה ופרותיה נתפלל שכמו  שהוציאנו ה' מגלות  לחירות כן יוציא את אחינו מכל ארצות גולתם אמן כן יהי רצון.

 

On Tu Be’shvat, we celebrate the connection of our nation with its land, trees and fruit. Let us pray that just like Hashem took us out from exile and brought us to freedom, so too may He take our brothers out from all the lands of their exile. Amen, so may it be His will.
