Background: Chaluziut is loosely translated as pioneering but we will see how the definition can be sharpened.

Goals:
The chanichim will be able to define what Chaluziut is. They will compare the original definition given in Tanach to how modern Zionisim defines the Chalutz. Different characteristics of the Chalutz should be discussed. Does being a Chalutz describe one aspect of life, or is it a philosophy of life? To what extent are we Chaluzim? The chanichim will also be able to give examples of individual Chaluzim who have impacted
Israel.

Sicha Chaluziut

Background: Chaluziut is loosely translated as pioneering but we will see how the definition can be sharpened.

Goals:
The chanichim will be able to define what Chaluziut is. They will compare the original definition given in Tanach to how modern Zionisim defines the Chalutz. Different characteristics of the Chalutz should be discussed. Does being a Chalutz describe one aspect of life, or is it a philosophy of life? To what extent are we Chaluzim? The chanichim will also be able to give examples of individual Chaluzim who have impacted
Israel.

Trigger:

What is Chaluziut? Where does the word come from? Do we know any other words that come from the same root ()?

Original Definition:

The term Chalutz is first mentioned in Bamidbar. Based on the text, what is the definition?

, , , , . , , , -, -; , . , , ---, , , . , , : , . {}

, , - - : - , . , - -, , -, . , , -- , ; , -- . , - , ; , , , . , - , ; , . , - , - : , . , , ----, . , - , --: , . , , , , -; - , . , , - - - - - , , -- - , . , - , -- , . , - , : -, . , , ; , .

Based on this text, the term Chalutz refers to someone who is armed. The word Chalutz is the part of the body between the rib cage and the hip. Therefore, one who is armed with a sword, which rests on his Chalutz area, is referred to as a Chalutz, because he is always prepared for battle. In Bamidbar, Bnei Yisrael are preparing to enter Eretz Yisrael and they need to be armed, because initially, their biggest danger is their physical survival.

Chaluziut, at this point, can also be defined in a wider sense to mean the original point of action of a person or a group (usually when talking about resettlement).

Modern Times:

The term Chalutz resurfaced over the last 100 years due to modern Zionism. With its revival, the definition changed. In 1917, Joseph Trumpeldor founded a movement called HaChalutz which dealt with establishing agricultural settlements.

David Ben Gurion defined the Chalutz as follows:

" ? - . --- - ."

Zeev Jabotinskly described a meeting of hios that took place in 1916 with Joseph Trumpeldor, where Trumpeldor explained what a Chalutz is:

" " ". , "". "", . "" , -esprit de corps , . , . . - . , . ? . , , ? . ? . ? . ? ? ? ? ? , . , , , : , , ; : .

- , - .

-.

. . : , , . , , " " ".

How has the definition changed? What are the communal implications of the chalutzim; what would a community full of chalutzim look like? What type of society is it most comparable to? Is it ideal?

How does American society compare to the Chaluzi society? What about Israeli society? Assuming that none of the societies are ideal, what aspects of each should be taken to create a utopia?

How is Chaluziut relevant today?

Should Chaluziut be defined differently today than how Jabotinsky defined it? Had he lived in modern times, is it possible that he wouldnt need the same type of Chalutz they needed back then?

Is there a religious element to Chaluziut, and was there one when Jabotinsky defined it? If there isnt/wasnt, could that be a reason as to why the State of Israel isnt a religious state? Where would religion fit into the life of the Chalutz?
