Resource Goal

To familiarize the chanichim with three different famous roads to Yerushalayim, from 3 different tkufot (time periods).

To teach about the singer Yafa Yarkoni & the song "Bab El-Wad"

Resource Contents

 Activity

Divide the chanichim (bunks) into 3 groups.
Each group should be prepped with information about the Tekufa they will belong to (see brief info at end of Peulah. More to follow in camp!)
In each group, the chanichim are trying to reach the Kotel, which will be symbolized by a small model of the Kotel in the middle of the room.
Each group will be told to start off from a different point in the room equi-distant from the Kotel. The chanichim advance by answering questions about Yerushalayim and their tkufa correctly. The chanichim will advance one by one with the one in the front holding a baton.
For instance, chanicha A gets a question right. She stays where she is, and the next chanicha in line goes ahead of her and gets the baton and answers a question. Then a 3rd chanicha goes in front of her, until everyone has gone and then the last one in line has a turn again, and so forth….
You will be given a list of questions to ask the chanichim during the game – if they get it right they move up a step, if not they stay where they are and next chanich takes a turn.

The 3 different groups

Group A: Paratroopers trying to get to the Kotel in the 1967 war. They are starting off at Har Hazeitim (Mount of Olives), and coming through Lion's Gate, and then through Har HaBayit until the Kotel. Their baton will be an Israeli Flag to raise over the Kotel when they capture it.

Group B: A group of Jews from the time of the Beit HaMikdash, coming from Chevron, on their way to Yerushalayim, doing Aliya LeRegel for Pesach. Their baton is a sheep (a.k.a. Korban Pesach).

Group C: Palmach soldiers building the Burma road in 1948, trying to make a by-pass road to Yerushalayim to break the siege there and bring up food and supplies. Their baton will be something that looks like a pavestone (because they're building the road).

Brief intro for groups

Group A:
Ask the chanichim "what happened in '67?", (try to explain to them that after '48 the Kotel was off limits to the Jews), "what's Har HaZeitim?", "Does anyone know who's buried there?" Then explain to them what to do and start the game.
For Group B:
"What's Aliya LeRegel?" "How did Jews travel then? Bus, car, donkey??" "On which holidays did we do Aliya L'Regel?" What were some of the details of what had to be done?
Group C:
"What's a siege?" "Who were the Palmach?." Ask then if any of them have ever heard about the Burma Road before – they probably haven't.
Short history lesson: In June '48 the Arab Legion had a tight siege on the main road to Jerusalem and many attempts to break through by the Palmach failed and the situation was desperate- no food/water left in Jerusalem. So an American fighter named Mickey Marcus, discovered by driving his jeep through the mountains a new road, and during many nights, Palmach fighters worked on clearing and paving that road so jeeps could travel on it, and after bringing supplies on that road by trucks they were still 300 miles short, so a hundred men walked the last distance carrying the bags of food and supplies on their backs!!

To summerise, tell the chanichim about the singer Yafa Yarkoni, you can find her biografy here.
Then teach them the song "Bab El-Wad" that was one of her famues songs, that tell the story about the siege on the main road to Jerusalem.

באב אל וואד

לחן: שמואל פרשקו
Original performer:  Yafa Yarkoni

Kan chayinu yachad

Odem Kalanit bahar uvamorad.
Ze asher yelech
Baderech shehalachnu
Al yishkach otanu,
Otanu Bab El-Wad.

Bab El–Wad…
Here I pass by,
Standing by the side of the stone.
A black asphalt road, with rocks and cracks.
Evening slowly comes,
A wind blows from the ocean,
The light of the first star shines from the other side
Of the house of Bet – Machsir.

Bab El-Wad,
Please remember our names forever.
Convoys burst out on the way into the city.
On the sides of the road lie our dead.
The iron skeletons are silent
Like my dead friend.
Bab El-Wad, forever remember our names.
Bab El-Wad, on the way in to the city (Jerusalem).

Tar and lead burnt here in the sun
There were nights of fire and knives.
Sadness and glory stay here together
Scorched armored car and an anonymous name.

And I walk here, passing by silently
And I remember them one by one,
Here we fought together on the cliffs
Here we were one family.

A spring day will come and the Cyclamens will bloom
Red Anemones will fill the mountain slope.
The one that will walk the path that we walked
Won't forget us – Bab El-Wad.
